On the outskirts of Kőszeg, Hungary, there is a felt factory. Built in 1898, it is a part of industrial heritage. However, in recent years, felt production has lost market demand and the factory fell into slow but sure decay. At the time, the yearly income of the factory was around 100 million HUF, which barely covered its expenses. The factory had lost 90% of its market, and its owner was preparing to sell it.
Therefore, in July 2014, in collaboration with Design Terminal, we organized the first Holis School in Kőszeg to honor it as a part of our industrial heritage by reimagining the factory’s future. This initiative brought together students and recent graduates from diverse fields (including economists, designers, sociologists, architects, and cultural anthropologists) to explore innovative scenarios for reviving the factory.
