Building the Resilience of NGOs
Centrum Veronica Hostětín, Czech Republic
2023
What was the challenge

Holis has worked extensively to support early childhood development (ECD) organisations in the Visegrad Region through initiatives like Holis School 2020 and the Places to Grow Project. These efforts have revealed a critical need for these organizations to cultivate internal resilience to navigate and flourish in an era of perpetual crisis.

Because of this, we decided to host Holis School 2023, collaborating closely with three ECD organisations in the region: Cesta Mladych from Slovakia, Férová škola from Czech Republic, NoBadKid from Hungary, selected for their potential and their challenges in operations, scaling, and finances. Our primary focus was to better understand these organizations' unique contexts and needs and to co-create practical, sustainable prototype solutions.

What are the
results

From August 27th to September 4th, 2023, 21 participants hailing from 3 continents and representing 11 countries and diverse fields (including design, strategy, activism, and coding) convened at the picturesque Veronica Centre in Hostetin, Czech Republic—a place emblematic of sustainable values. Together with the three selected NGOs, they co-created innovative business and creative proposals to fortify their organizational resilience.

During the nine-day program, participants, organized into three teams and guided by three international team facilitators, developed three distinct, actionable projects tailored to each NGO. The projects focused on creating functions, activities, and sustainable business models.

Key insights that emerged from the workshop:

  • The most substantial potential for growth and resilience originates within the organizations rather than external influences.
  • Reaffirming an organization's mission and vision, particularly after sustained periods of operation, is a pivotal driver of resilience.
  • Exploring unconventional partnerships yields significant opportunities.

"I decided to join this year's Holis school because of my curiosities. I was really interested in disrupting my environment: trying something new, jumping into a project, and completely abandoning the current ways that I work. Then, see how I can add something new and reinvigorate them in something possibly more sustainable and healthy in the long run."

"Holis School has a unique environment where the inputs of individuals are admired, and their uniqueness encouraged. Learning here is implicit in every step of the process and your focus magically shifts from self to group the minute you join."
